Hey Dancers and Dance Fans!
I’ve always loved reading biographies, and lately, I’ve been reading a lot of books about dance – big surprise, right? My friend and mentor Jerry Kokich, former dancer with The Joffrey Ballet (he is a WONDERFUL coach, by the way!) lent me his copy of this book I am talking about today: “The Joffrey Ballet – Robert Joffrey and The Making of An American Dance Company” by Sasha Anawalt.
I highly recommend you read it – you’ll learn so much about the lineage of American ballet and dance and how one man with a dream made one of our greatest ballet companies a reality, in spite of many, many challenges. If anything, you will be inspired to make one of your dreams come true. Anything is possible if you have the passion and commitment to make it a reality.
A personal thank you to all of the people who came into my dance life and inspired, taught, or just plain helped me with my career, who were directly connected to The Joffrey Ballet. I’ve written down here where I met them, but if you research their names, you’ll find out so much more about their impressive dance careers:
Una Kai – State Ballet of Missouri – The Firebird & The Nutcracker
Sally Brayley Bliss – Webster University Summer Dance Program & St. Louis Dance
Trinette Singleton – Princeton Ballet Summer Dance Program
Rochelle Zide-Booth – Butler University Dance Program
Jerry Kokich – Lauridsen Ballet Centre
